Quantum Catz: KZ: ::walks into Libby's shop sometime
in the afternoon. She's probably not really talked to libby much
before except maybe at becky's wedding as she's kept mostly to
herself since moving to marquis::
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smiles warmly at Kizzie as
she comes in:: Good afternoon; welcome to Libby's. Kizzie, right?
Can I help you?
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles slightly:: I'm just
having a look around - i didn't bring much with me when i moved
and it's nice to treat yourself occasionally, right?
YarnKittymon: LB: ::grins:: You're right about
that. ::steps out to look over the clothes, trying to find something
that suits Kizzie:: What were you looking for?
Quantum Catz: KZ: Nothing in particular really
- i don't really know much about fashion
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods:: Well, were you looking
for something fancy, or just something to wear every day? You
can look pretty in both, you know.
Quantum Catz: KZ: I don't really have anything
to dress up for so every day i guess
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, scanning the store::
It doesn't seem to really snow much here, but it's still cool
enough, most of the brighter prints are gone. ::motions to a deep
blue dress about Kizzie's size; it's simple but attractive, buttoning
in front, with a bit of a sailor collar:: How about that?
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles:: It does look nice
YarnKittymon: LB: ::hands it to her:: You'll
have to try it on, then. Do you see anything else you like?
Quantum Catz: KZ: I'll just try this, thanks
::smiles weakly:: I spend most of my time with plants anyway so
it's not like many people are going to notice a new dress on me
YarnKittymon: LB: ::laughs:: You can't tell me
they wouldn't like to see you in a nice floral print?
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::chuckles:: I suppose if they
bothered to look
YarnKittymon: LB: *Can* they look? Well, I suppose
even if they could, they probably wouldn't care; cats and dogs
don't.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::Smiles:: No, clothing isn't
the most important thing in the world to plants
YarnKittymon: : ::the bell on the door rings,
and a handsome man with dark skin and blue eyes, wearing a trenchcoat
and fedora comes in, taking off his hat:: Good day, Miss Williamson,
Miss MacKenzie. ::his eyes linger on Kizzie::
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::looks a bit confused as she
doesn't think she's ever met the man before:: Um...hello...
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smirks:: It's Mrs. Richards
now, remember?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::steps forward:: Oh, right;
my apologies. But this *is* Miss MacKenzie, am I right? ::smiles
encouragingly at Kizzie::
Quantum Catz: KZ: Um, yes it is...do i know you?
I don't think we've ever met...
YarnKittymon: GU: ::shakes his head:: I doubt
you have. Detective Guy Stowe. ::bows to her:: And I've come two
days' journey to ask your help.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::glances over at Libby for
a moment, before turning to look at Guy again, feeling a bit lost::
My help?
YarnKittymon: LB: ::frowns:: Mr. Stowe, the least
you could do is let her finish shopping! Are you trying to ruin
my business?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::frowns:: I'm sorry, Mrs.
Richards...I just got a bit carried away there. I guess this can
wait another twenty minutes. ::after a moment:: Congratulations
on the new arrival, by the way.
YarnKittymon: LB: ::looks back at Guy blankly::
You mean Josh and Eli and Dolly? They're not my children, you
know; I'm just watching them for Isaac until he's...better.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::shakes his head:: Not that.
You're expecting, right?
YarnKittymon: LB: ::stares at Guy, literally
stunned speechless::
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles at Libby:: Oh, congratulations
YarnKittymon: LB: ::shakes her head, starting
to flush red:: I don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Stowe...I'm
not...
YarnKittymon: GU: ::starting to look a little
uncomfortable; quietly:: Mrs. Richards, I was sure you knew, or
I wouldn't have mentioned it...I can tell where people *are*,
you know...and there's...the beginnings of a person inside of
you.
YarnKittymon: LB: ::shakes her head, still in
disbelief:: Is it...is it healthy?
YarnKittymon: GU: I'm not sure I can tell, since
it's not born yet...but I think so.
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, biting her lip, and
then turns to Kizzie; weakly:: Thanks...did you want to try on
that dress?
Quantum Catz: KZ: Um...i suppose so...are you
okay?
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smiles nervously:: I'm wonderful
if Mr. Stowe's right about it all, Kizzie.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles:: I'll go try on the
dress then
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, showing Kizzie to the
dressing room; she then sinks down into a chair, looking straight
ahead, silently::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::after a minute:: I'll be
outside, when Miss MacKenzie is ready. Good day, Mrs. Richards,
and congratulations.
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods numbly::
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::comes out, wearing the dress;
it fits her well enough but she looks a bit uncertain:: What do
you think? Do you think it looks okay?
YarnKittymon: LB: ::quickly stands up, smiling::
It's very pretty, if you like it. It fits you. I think I have
another of the same style and size in gray, if you'd prefer.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles:: I like the blue
::glances towards the front door:: What do you think that Mr Stowe
wants me for? I can't think what i could possibly do to help a
detective unless he's having problems with his garden...
YarnKittymon: LB: ::shrugs:: I don't know. Maybe
a crime was committed in front of a tree and he thinks you can
ask it who the culprit was. Would you like to wear your dress
out today?
Quantum Catz: KZ: Oh, that's okay - i think i'll
change out of it for now ::goes back to change into her other
dress:
YarnKittymon: LB: ::goes to the register and
waits; after a moment she gingerly touches her stomach, wondering
if Guy's words could be true::
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::comes back out a few minutes
later and walks over to the register; smiles:: I bet your husband'll
be happy when you tell him the news
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, telling Kizzie the
price, which sounds fair:: As soon as I've rung you up I'll go
see him. ::quietly:: I've been working pretty long hours lately,
without Maeve to keep me company and back me up. But I guess it
won't hurt to close shop for an hour.
Quantum Catz: KZ: You know if you need any help
while Maeve's...away...I mean, i work on people's gardens but
that never takes up my whole day...
YarnKittymon: LB: ::looks at Kizzie, wide-eyed::
I wouldn't want to trouble you...but if you're interested....
Quantum Catz: KZ: I used to have to work an awful
lot more before i came to the island - i'm sure i cna manage some
time working here if you need it
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smiles:: All right, then...I
don't think I'm in any condition to train you today but if you
could come in tomorrow when you're done with your trees and gardens?
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles:: Okay then ::pays
for her dress and glances towards the door again:: I guess i had
better go and see what Mr Stowe wants then
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, smiling:: I do have
a back door, if you'd rather slip out, but I suppose if he really
can tell where people are, that wouldn't do you much good.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles:: Whatever it is,
i'm sure it can't be so bad that i'd want to run away from him
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smiles, taking the money
out of the register:: Well, good luck, anyway.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::is sitting on a bench a few
yards from Libby's shop, but stands when he sees Kizzie leave
the store, walking over to her:: Good day...
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles rather uncertainly::
Hello again
YarnKittymon: GU: Can I buy you lunch, or something
to drink? I have a few questions for you.
Quantum Catz: KZ: Um...i suppose so - what exactly
is it you want to know about?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::heads towards his favorite
cafe; quietly:: There was a murder out in the wild forests, about
two weeks ago. No suspects.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::pales a bit and sighs:: To
be honest...i don't know if i'd want to help you with that
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods:: I wouldn't have asked
you, but...::frowns:: I don't know how to say it. It sounds absurd,
but it looked to me as though the trees had killed him.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::shakes her head, though she
looks shaken:: That's impossible
YarnKittymon: GU: I agree, but there were no
footprints besides the victim's, and there was blood on a branch
six feet off the ground.
Quantum Catz: KZ: Just because he died in the
tree, doesn't mean the tree killed him
YarnKittymon: GU: He wasn't found in the tree,
Miss MacKenzie. He was found beneath it, as though it had struck
him in the face.
Quantum Catz: KZ: A tree wouldn't just naturally
do that...i've only ever known trees to openly react to things
happening to me...and i most certainly wasn't there
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods, frowning:: It could
be some outside force is somehow controlling the trees. But I
can't figure out how it would have happened, without the trees.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::sighs:: You're asking me
to witness a murder
YarnKittymon: GU: ::softly:: I can't afford to
pay more than your room and board, and a gold for your trouble.
Quantum Catz: KZ: Money's no reason to do something
like that ::sighs:: What does it matter anyway? The person's dead
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods:: But it's my job to
find out who did it, so justice can be served, and so it can't
happen again. ::quietly:: I won't pressure a woman into such a
situation, of course. It's up to you.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::looks down:: If someone is
controlling the trees...i should probably check it out...or it'll
come back to haunt me later
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods again, his lips not
betraying his pleasure, though his eyes do:: All right. Did you
still want lunch first? If not, you should get packed. It's a
full day's journey, a bit more, actually, and we're starting out
late.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::notices the look in his eyes
and sighs:: I'll have to go tell Libby i can't make it tomorrow,
if she's still there - then i think i will just go pack
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods, looking at the cafe::
I'll be inside, but I'm ready when you are. Thank you, Miss MacKenzie.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::doesn't smile:: I'm not doing
it for you - if this is hurting the trees there in anyway...eventually
i'd be the one who had to fix it...for my own sanity if nothing
else ::turns to head back to Libbys::
YarnKittymon: : ::Libby's shop already has the
"Closed" sign out::
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::goes to pack instead - she
doesn't want to interrupt so she decides to write libby a note
and leave it before she goes::
YarnKittymon: LB: ::makes her way to the tavern,
feeling a little sick and very anxious, and once inside, heads
towards the bar, looking for Jack::
Quantum Catz: JK: ::is leaning against the bar,
listening to one of the regulars talking about his day::
YarnKittymon: LB: ::keeps a distance, waiting
patiently for Jack to finish, knowing his tip may depend on it::
Quantum Catz: JK: ::the man finishes talking
soon after that and Jack excuses himself, coming over to Libby,
smiling:: Aren't you meant to be working?
YarnKittymon: LB: ::takes Jack's hand nervously;
whispers:: We need to talk for a minute, alone.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::looks a bit confused but
he nods:: Sure, it's not like it's busy in here just now
YarnKittymon: LB: ::softly:: Here, or should
we just go home? Except the kids might be back from school by
now.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::frowns:: We could go into
the office in the back if you want
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, smiling weakly; quietly,
before they even reach the office:: Don't get your hopes up too
much.
Quantum Catz: JK: About what? ::laughs weakly::
Libby, i have no idea what yer on about
YarnKittymon: LB: ::closes the door and looks
up at Jack; softly:: Guy Stowe was in town. You know how he can
tell where anyone is, if he likes?
Quantum Catz: JK: Sounds familiar, yeah
YarnKittymon: LB: ::flushing, and looking like
she can't believe it herself:: He...um...congratulated me. He
sensed...a baby...
Quantum Catz: JK: ::grins:: Well that's good
isn't it? I thought you were gonna tell me something bad ::hugs
Libby::
YarnKittymon: LB: ::laughs, putting her arms
around Jack:: I didn't...didn't know if you'd believe him...if
*I* should believe him...I mean, it's possible, but I still...
Quantum Catz: JK: ::chuckles:: Well i've learned
to believe a hell of a lot of things are possible since i came
here
YarnKittymon: LB: ::kisses Jack; softly:: I'll
go to the midwife first, to be sure...but Mr. Stowe said the baby
was healthy as far as he could tell.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::smiles:: Useful guy...what
was he doin' in the shop anyway?
YarnKittymon: LB: He was looking for Kizzie.
I don't know why, but I'll bet it had to do with a case.
Quantum Catz: JK: Handy for us that she happened
to be there then i guess...though if he's right then you'd've
known about it soon enough
YarnKittymon: LB: ::nods, smiling weakly:: I
should be getting back to work, I guess...but I thought you should
know.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::grins:: Well it's more interesting
than anything the regulars have to say
YarnKittymon: LB: ::kisses Jack again, laughing::
I was afraid you wouldn't want one, after having Isaac's siblings
for a few days.
Quantum Catz: JK: Ah, they're good kids - better'n
some i've met
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smiles:: I think they're
wonderful, but it'll be nice to have the house to ourselves again.
Anyway, maybe I'll go see the midwife first. I'm not sure I'll
be much good at work 'til I know for sure.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::chuckles:: Alright, and you
can come back and tell me what she says
YarnKittymon: LB: ::smiles:: All right, but I'll
have to speak in code, unless you want all of Marquis knowing.
::pauses:: Though given this town, I'll bet they knew before Guy
even came through.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::laughs:: I don't think they're
that good - they'd've been talking about it in here if they were
YarnKittymon: LB: ::grins:: Are we really the
most interesting thing the town has to talk about? I guess I feel
flattered. ::opens the door::
Quantum Catz: JK: ::chuckles:: Well any news
is news worth talking about after a few drinks
YarnKittymon: LB: ::softly:: I guess we won't
know for sure for a few days, unless she has some test I've not
heard of. But I guess you'll know as soon as you see me what happened.
::smiles:: See you tonight, Jack.
Quantum Catz: JK: ::smiles back:: Alright, see
you
YarnKittymon: GU: ::is still waiting in the cafe,
talking pleasantly with a homely woman; last time he was in town,
he solved the problem of who was stealing her apples::
Quantum Catz: KI: ::it doesn't take Kizzie long
to pack and to leave a note for Libby, so she's soon walking into
the cafe, looking a bit pale as she thinks of what she's going
to have to see::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::stands up when Kizzie enters::
Are you sure you don't want anything? It's going to be a long
trip.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::Shakes her head:: I'll be
fine
YarnKittymon: GU: ::bids goodbye to the woman,
dropping a few gold coins on the table, and walks over to Kizzie;
quietly:: I just have the one horse, no cart. I hope that's all
right? We'll make better time, really.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles weakly:: You really
know how to accomodate a lady, don't you? ::shrugs:: It's fine
YarnKittymon: GU: If not, I'll rent a cart. It's
no bother, since I'll be bringing you back anyway.
Quantum Catz: KZ: I've put up with worse in my
life than sharing a horse
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods; quietly:: And you don't
fear the gossips? Although a cart might just make it worse.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::smiles slightly:: Seems you
don't know everything about me then, if you have to ask that
YarnKittymon: GU: ::smiles back, suddenly liking
the gutsy young woman:: Fair enough. ::goes to the stable and
readies his horse, a sturdy brown mare he's called Nutmeg; once
the horse is ready and outside, Guy loads Kizzie's things into
the saddlebag and helps the girl on before mounting::
Quantum Catz: KZ: Has anything else happened
at this place? Other than the death, i mean?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::starts off on the main road
leading west:: There's rumors the land's been purchased to turn
into farms, but nothing concrete. I checked the land records;
it's still government owned.
Quantum Catz: KZ: A normal tree won't fight for
it's life, if that's what you're suggesting
YarnKittymon: GU: Well, someone who loved the
forest and who had the ability might somehow force the trees to
fight, don't you think?
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::sighs:: But then the people
would just cut the trees down out of fear..
YarnKittymon: GU: ::looks a little surprised::
So maybe someone who wanted the land cleared did it.
Quantum Catz: KZ: Well if that's what they want...then
they'll probably do more than just go after that one person
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods; quietly:: We'll be
there about this time tomorrow. We'll figure it out then. If you
sense anything odd in the trees as we draw nearer...even distress...let
me know.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::softly:: If i sense any distress
in the trees, i'll want to go to them...so you'll know
YarnKittymon: GU: Of course you would. ::quietly::
The woman I asked said you were the sweetest thing she knew, getting
so upset over trees.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::laughs weakly:: What woman
was that?
YarnKittymon: GU: Mrs. Neighbors. She said you
saved that apple tree her husband planted fifteen years ago, right
before he died. Said you were nearly as worked up about the tree
as she was.
Quantum Catz: KZ: Some trees have memories almost
as strong as humans..and they all flood into me like they're my
own ::laughs weakly:: Of course, it didn't help that it was young,
desperate to live...desperate for me to save it anyway
YarnKittymon: GU: ::smiles:: Well, she was sure
it was going to give her the best apples in the world next year.
And from the way she was talking, I think she might be right.
Quantum Catz: KZ: It's probably one of the healthiest
trees in the town - almost all of it's life's come from me
YarnKittymon: GU: I'd heard stories, but I didn't
know you were that good. ::slowly:: The trees in the forest sure
seemed healthy, if that makes you feel better.
Quantum Catz: KZ: ::chuckles:: It's not really
about being good - i can give them whatever it is they need to
live and they take as much of it as they need unless i stop them
YarnKittymon: GU: What's it like? It's not like
you're just rich soil or anything, is it?
Quantum Catz: KZ: It's like being drained of
energy, i guess...more like the sun than the soil...flowers always
grow better when i tend to them
YarnKittymon: GU: ::nods, interested, and makes
light conversation until they have to stop in a small town for
the night. As promised, it's not until the next afternoon that
they start to approach the forest where someone was murdered.
Kizzie probably senses something's a bit strange, maybe in the
trees themselves, but there's certainly no signs of distress::
